In the last review I said that Getting Killed would be my next review. Here it is, 2 months later. No, it didn't take me 2 months to write this review, I just didn't get to it. To be upfront this album's been part of my regular rotation since at least December so I've had a LOT more time with it than other albums I've reviewed in the past. That aside:
Getting Killed is Geese's 4th studio album following 2023's 3D Country (review here)*. This time around Geese opt for a generally slower, more "relaxed" sound, however there are still a chaotic moments on the album a la 3D Country. "Trinidad" is the best example of this, opening the album on a fairly noisy and bombastic note and featuring the only instance of screamed vocals** on the entire album.
Following "Trinidad" is "Cobra", which is more in line with what the rest of the album sounds like. It's a laid back emotive ballad with guitars that sound "tropical" due to the guitar tone used and its gentle instrumental. "Islands of Men" begins with a fade in of a clean guitar strumming essentially a single chord. The rhythm used and the line's repetition throughout makes it an element of this album that gets seared into your brain after repeat listens. The 6 minute, building "Long Island City Here I Come" culminates in the entire band playing uptempo and ends the album almost as chaotically as it began.
Much like 3D country, the lyrics are pretty strong throughout the entire album. Some examples:.
"I've got half a mind / To just pay for the lobotomy / And tell 'em get rid of the bad times / And get rid of the good times too / I've got no more thinking to do"
"I'm getting killed by a pretty good life / Getting killed by a pretty good life"
My favorite tracks from this album are "Au Pays du Cocaine", "Cobra", and "Husbands".
Overall, on Getting Killed Geese shift their sound away from the more chaotic sound of their 3rd album to bring listeners a more "subdued" sound that they pull off very well, and continue to write songs with strong lyrics accented by Winter's dynamic vocals. I'd say I personally prefer 3D Country over Getting Killed but not because there's something "wrong" with Getting Killed. Both albums have bangers but 3D Country's sound is honestly more interesting to me overall. I wish I could describe "why" for you but it's more personal taste than any one thing.
